A Familiar October Ritual Comes Back to Old Town

There is something reliably grounding about the Lewisville High School Homecoming Parade. It does not require a ticket, a registration form, or much planning at all. On the evening of Wednesday, October 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., the parade winds through Old Town Lewisville in the same spirit it always has — floats, school colors, and the kind of crowd energy that a neighborhood sidewalk handles better than any stadium.

For two hours, Old Town becomes the backdrop for one of the school year’s more visible community traditions. Students, families, alumni, and neighbors who have no connection to the school at all tend to show up anyway, because a parade through a walkable historic district is simply a good reason to be outside on a fall weeknight.

What Old Town Offers as a Setting

The choice of Old Town as the parade route is not incidental. The district’s streets are scaled for exactly this kind of event — close enough to the sidewalk that you can actually see the faces on the floats, hear the band without the sound dissolving into a parking lot, and run into three people you know before the procession is halfway through.

Old Town Lewisville has been the site of several community gatherings this fall, and the Homecoming Parade fits naturally into that rhythm. The area around Old Town Plaza and the surrounding blocks offers enough room to spread out without losing the close-quarters feel that makes a parade worth attending in person rather than watching on a phone screen later.

The High School Side of It

For Lewisville High School students, the Homecoming Parade is one of the few school events that spills entirely into public space. It is not contained within a gymnasium or a football stadium. The parade moves through the city itself, which changes the dynamic — the school comes to the community rather than the other way around.

That dynamic matters in a city the size of Lewisville. The high school draws from a wide geographic area, and not every family lives within easy walking distance of the campus. The parade in Old Town gives the broader community a chance to see the school’s students and programs without navigating a ticketed event or a crowded parking situation on campus.

Homecoming week in general tends to concentrate school spirit into a few days, and the parade is usually its most public expression. Floats built over the preceding weekend, students who have been rehearsing with the band, and the particular self-consciousness of teenagers doing something in front of their town — it adds up to something genuinely worth watching.

Fitting It Into the Month

October is a full month in Lewisville this year. The weekend before the parade includes the Lewisville Lake Symphony’s season opener at the Grand Theater on October 9, and the weekend after brings a cluster of activity at LLELA including a bird walk, a tree planting, and a pioneer tour of the Minor-Porter Log House. Toward the end of the month, Keep Lewisville Beautiful is partnering with the city on a free tree giveaway for registered residents as part of Make a Difference Day on October 24.

The Homecoming Parade on the 14th sits in the middle of all that, on a Wednesday evening when the week might otherwise feel ordinary. Two hours in Old Town, no admission, no special preparation required.

How to Be There

The parade runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on October 14. Old Town Lewisville is the location, and given the nature of the route, arriving a few minutes early to find a good stretch of sidewalk is the only real logistical consideration. Street parking in Old Town is generally accessible for an evening event, and the district is compact enough that walking from a few blocks away is a reasonable option.

There is no formal viewing area or assigned seating — this is a parade, and the whole point is that you stand on the street and watch it go by. For families with younger kids, that simplicity is often the appeal. For longtime Lewisville residents, the parade is one of those annual markers that signals the school year is well underway and that fall, unhurried and familiar, has properly arrived.
